1971 Corvette
1971 Corvette Engine stats label
The future had arrived in the form of lower compression ratios for 1971. Unleaded gasoline and its lower octane rating forced the move and an era was over, not to return. The change caused the hp ratings of the LS5 motor to go from 390 hp (1970) to 365 hp. Most reports indicate the performance loss was negligible and gasoline purchasing was easier.

K23 is the build date of your car. K = June, so your car was built on June 23, 1971.

F25 on the trim tag translates to January 25, 1971. "A" denotes August.

Trim code 417 is saddle, vinyl. Trim code 420 would be saddle, leather.

My 71 LS5 vin # is 194671s104153.Is this a early or late production ? It has the orange valve covers and I was told by many that they should be chrome. Someware I read the early production had orange and late had the chrome. Also did it come with the braded plug wires? Thanks for your time John

RE: My 71 LS5
Your LS5, at 4,153 out of 21,801 would be an early production. Only the very early cars had chrome valve covers, later were orange, so what you have is likely correct.
